Two international relief agencies in cooperation with Thanh Nien newspaper on Tuesday provided further humanitarian aid to victims of typhoon Ketsana in the central province of Quang Nam.
The aid, including provision of household items and new roofs for homes, was part of a six-month project financed by German relief agency Malteser International (MInt) and the European Commission Humanitarian Organization (ECHO).
The project, with a total value of 312,040 euro (US$429,250), will last until June 30. Beneficiaries are residents in five districts in Quang Nam that were heavily hit by typhoon Ketsana in September last year.
According to MInt, the project will distribute rice to 7,000 families, hygiene kits to 7,400 families and new roofing for 660 households.
The Thanh Nien Newspaper and the Quang Nam Province Youth Federation helped deliver aid to the typhoon victims.
Cordula Wasser of MInt has lauded Thanh Nien and other partners for their assistance. She also said her agency wants to implement more aid projects that can better meet the demand of local residents.
Le Duc Hung, deputy head of Thanh Nien Newspaper’s representative office in the central region, said residents in typhoon prone areas needed large and stable schools and shelters that can accommodate between 200 and 300 people during a typhoon.
Such long-lasting construction projects would help them deal better with natural disasters, he said.
