Bright prospects arise from chaos
It was an unseemly scene as teachers-to-be reportedly pushed and shoved each other while submitting job applications recently. But it had a good side – it means more people are being attracted to this noble career.

Thousands of applicants for public school teaching jobs in Ho Chi Minh City were involved in the chaotic scenes.

A guard was said to have used a fire extinguisher to disperse the crowd to prevent people from being trampled.

The melee was strongly criticized because teachers are supposed to be set examples for students.

But it is good people are returning to a job which was criticized as being thankless and poorly-paid.

Newspapers have been sounding the alarm after many teachers quit because of low salaries.

An official from the city Department of Education once said, “The income of a nursery school teacher is no higher than a domestic help’s.”

The department has announced it is recruiting 4,322 teachers but the number of applicants is estimated to be triple that number.

Someone said it is their last choice for a job.

That might be true for some but for others it is about making a difference.

Most say being a teacher is an honorable job: with the images of white chalk, the looks of students, and more importantly, the students’ success.

The new school year is approaching and the vital force of education is expected to strengthen our society.

Hopefully there won’t be any news of students dropping out.
