Under a plan to manage the nationwide electricity shortage, each province was supposed to have rotational power cuts.
But Tien Giang Province People’s Committee instructed the province’s electric company to guarantee electricity to 201 government offices and more than 150 enterprises.
In many residential areas, the power is only supplied every other day and Tien Giang Electricity Company has assigned more than 50 workers to organize the power cuts.
Many people have complained homes that share the lines with the favored businesses and government offices also have a permanent electricity supply.
Those less fortunate say the allocation is unfair and all residential customers should have the same access to power.
Some said it was more important to supply power for production and many district and commune offices did not need special favors when it came to electricity.
According to Tien Giang Electricity Company, the Electricity Company No. 2 was capable of supplying between 95 to 114 megawatts per hour, while the local demand was up to 160 megawatts an hour.
Company Deputy Director Nguyen Dien Khoan said the favored sections needed more than 50 megawatts per hour, accounting for half the province’s supply.
