The meeting was called to review the efficiency of Vietnam state-owned corporations.
Perhaps the official was referring to the series of media reports about state corporations wasting public funds and putting a drag on the national economy.
He was right in one respect: the government owns the media.
That means the state media has a responsibility to report what’s in the best interest of the country and its people.
With state companies being the flagship of this country’s economy and direction, the media must report their operations – even the negative facts.
That could include exposing the ineffective investment of state companies or reporting on the social and economic impacts of these major state entities.
The state corporations must realize they have a responsibility to cooperate with the state media – in terms of providing access to information.
The public has the right to know.
And people have been and are worried – against the backdrop of the current global economic downturn – that state companies have been too “free” in their operations.
So don’t expect the state media to give out rosy reports if things aren’t improving.
