Over 20 million Vietnamese enter new school year
Chairwoman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Council Pham Phuong Thao greets students for their first day of school at the Le Hong Phong School for the gifted in HCMC Friday.
Roughly 22 million Vietnamese students began the new academic year this week, one million more than last year, according to the Ministry of Education and Training.

Schools around the nation launched the new school year between September 3-5 this year.

In previous years, September 5th was the official starting day of the academic year in most localities.

Statistics by the ministry show that of the nearly 22 million students, some 16.2 million attend elementary, junior high and high schools while nearly 1.7 million are undergraduate college or university students.

The rest attend pre-schools, supplementary schools and vocational training schools and centers.

According to a 2008-2009 plan announced earlier this year by the ministry, the government aims to boost the application of information technology in schools, reform financial management mechanisms and improve infrastructure at schools nationwide.

According to deputy minister Pham Vu Luan, the educational authority would allot VND3.7 trillion (more than US$223 million) towards building new schools and housing for teachers and students.

Nguyen Xuan Vang, head of the ministry’s Foreign Training Bureau, said the ministry would open classes this year in which some 1,500 university lecturers would study for PhDs.

He said the ministry would also send another 500 lecturers abroad for further studies.
