Experimental music weaves its web in HCMC
A scene from Kim Ngoc’s performance Ai Dem Con Nhen Giang Mung.
For people who want to see something new in Ho Chi Minh City, there’s an experimental music performance at 8 p.m. on September 12 and 13 at the HCMC Conservatory of Music.

Ai Dem Con Nhen Giang Mung (What makes the spider spin her web?) was created by Vietnamese artist Kim Ngoc and Canadian video artist Brian Ring.

The show presents a new type of theater in Vietnam – dubbed “music theater” by Ngoc – which combines electronic music, special interactions, visuals effects and vocal performance.

“The performance’s title is a well-known line from an old Vietnamese folk song which often appears in other traditional songs,” Ngoc said.

“It is both a question and a lament. The sentence refers to women’s insecure thoughts. Like a rope, countless insecurities bind women together in a journey from the past to the present.”

Born in Hanoi in 1974, Ngoc studied at the Hanoi National Conservatory of Music and Germany’s Cologne College of Music.

She has participated in several international music festivals and projects including Frau Musica Nova Festival in Germany, Asian Contemporary Music Festival in the Philippines and the Silk Road Project in the US

Her music theater piece titled “The Absence” was produced by the 10th Munich Biennial of Contemporary Music in 2006 and Siemens Arts Program.

Free tickets are available at the Goethe Institute, located at 335/4 Dien Bien Phu Street, District 3.

HCMC Conservatory of Music is located at 112 Nguyen Du Street in District 1.
