Police said Kiet returned to Vietnam to visit his relatives in June last year and made promises to make documents for some individuals to come to Australia to work for a fee of AUD3,000 (US$2,900) per person.
A group of about 10 people from Hanoi and other provinces subsequently gave Kiet a sum of nearly $10,000 to facilitate the necessary paperwork.
After Kiet didn’t provide the documents, they went to the Australian Embassy and discovered they were deceived.
Hanoi police were informed and Kiet was asked to show up at the police station when he returned to Vietnam on July 1.
