Assuming the monthly post will improve Vietnam’s position and relationships in the international arena, Pham Vinh Quang, Vice Director of the Department of International Organizations under the Foreign Ministry, told a press briefing.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem is scheduled to lead a Vietnamese delegation to New York on July 15 to attend a number of important events of the UNSC and the UN, Quang said.
Khiem is scheduled to preside over a high-level open debate on children affected by armed conflict on July 17, the vice director said, noting that UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is expected to attend.
Khiem is also scheduled to meet with international representatives, the UN Secretary General, and leaders of UN agencies such as the UN Development Program (UNDP), and the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), aiming to boost Vietnam’s multilateral and bilateral relations, Quang said.
As UNSC president, Vietnam will build a working agenda, preside over meetings, and represent the UNSC in dealings with members and non-members of the UN.
