ASEAN lawmakers seek to enhance competence, cooperation
Southeast Asian lawmakers convened a meeting in Ho Chi Minh City Monday, which aimed to further improve their professional proficiency and boost training cooperation for greater regional inter-parliamentary linkage.

The two-day meeting, hosted by the Vietnamese National Assembly, was an initiative proposed by Vietnam at the 29th ASEAN Inter-parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) in August 2008.

National Assembly Vice Chairwoman Tong Thi Phong said the Vietnamese lawmaking body pays particular attention to developing its members’ professional skills, regarding the process as a “new, difficult, but crucial task to raise deputies’ competence and promote inter-regional cooperation.”

Phong highlighted the consensus reached by AIPA members on organizational and professional renewal to better contribute to developing the ASEAN community.

During the meeting, ASEAN lawmakers said that mechanisms to improve the knowledge and skills of elected deputies will help AIPA members understand differences in the organization of governments and parliaments in their respective countries.

Representatives of AIPA members put forth specific proposals for the improvement and development of deputies’ professional competence, including Vietnam’s suggestion of formulating a strategic program to assist training elected deputies in a number of work-related areas.
