Cable signal thefts pinch providers’ pockets in southern province
Police of Ca Mau Town in Ca Mau Province recently discovered 20 cases of cable signal thefts, as cable TV providers complained of losses caused by the thieves.

The alleged culprits have confessed to the theft but have not been punished.

“More than 300 subscribers have ended their contracts with us,” said Phan Phu Quoc, sales manager of Tay Do Cable Television which is one of the cable TV suppliers in the province.

Quoc said customers refused to continue using cable TV services due to bad or interrupted signals, caused by individuals stealing cable signals.

Many cable TV subscribers also said they terminated contracts because they couldn’t watch the provided channels. They said that some of their neighbors have tampered with the lines but they preferred to end the contracts rather than get into conflicts them.

On one occasion, technicians of a cable TV supplier in Ca Mau Town detected a line failure due to signal theft. An inspection by the cable TV provider showed the signal can be stolen in several ways, including making direct connections to the dividing box on the line, connecting to the signal line or connecting from TV antennas to the line.

A director of a cable TV supplier said some illegal connections were even “more perfect” than those made by his staff.

The cable company also reported cases where thieves stole signals to resell to other people.
