The boy, identified only as L., was kidnapped shortly after arriving at Tan Lap No. 1 Elementary School.
The boy’s family received a phone call from the abductor one hour later demanding a ransom of VND50 million (US$3,000) to be handed over at 5 p.m. the same day.
The boy’s father said the kidnapper agreed to a reduced payment of VND40 million ($2,400) after he said he didn’t have the full amount.
The family then called local police.
Under police supervision, the boy’s mother phoned the kidnapper to say they could only pay VND25 million ($1,500).
The alleged kidnapper, 18-year-old Nguyen Phuong Binh, agreed and was subsequently arrested while trying to make the exchange later at Chut Mountain in Nha Trang Town.
Binh, who works at a Nha Trang restaurant, confessed to being the sole abductor.
He said he had carried out the kidnapping by imitating what he’d seen in movies and intended to take the ransom money and move to a different province.
Police said Binh had hired a xe om (motorbike taxi) driver to take the boy to Chut Mountain, telling L. he was being taken to meet his father.
During the abduction, Binh had given the boy cookies and water and let him play games on his cell phone, police said.
