Plantation guards accused of vicious attack
Tran Duy Khang (R) from Chau Duc District in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province was allegedly attacked and left unconscious last Monday by guards at Cu Bi Rubber Plantation.
A resident of Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province has accused guards of a local rubber plantation of beating him unconscious in an unprovoked attack.

Tran Duy Khang reported to police the alleged assault by four guards from Cu Bi Rubber Plantation at Cu Bi Commune.

The case has since been transferred to Chau Duc District’s police to investigate.

Khang said he was stopped by four guards from Cu Bi Rubber Plantation last Monday when he was traveling past.

He said the guards, who were armed with guns, used clubs to beat him unconscious.

“I have identified [Nguyen Dinh] Dung and [Doan Xuan] Phong among the four guards from the plantation who attacked me,” Khang said.

Khang said he was alone when he regained consciousness.

He then phoned his family, who took him to hospital.

“We have interrogated the two alleged attackers, Nguyen Dinh Dung and Doan Xuan Phong, from the plantation,” said Le Thanh Long, vice chief police of Cu Bi Commune.

Long said it was unlawful for the guards to attack people.

However, director of Cu Bi Rubber Plantation, Nguyen Dang Thanh, said: “The guards have the right to stop motorbikes when they are on duty. It was Khang who provoked them before they struck him.”

Thanh said the plantation would await the police decision before taking any action against the guards.

Cu Bi Commune police said there had been many reports of residents being attacked by the plantation’s guards, resulting in serious injuries including broken ribs and arms.

Police said in 2004, one resident was deliberately run down by guards on motorbikes.

He suffered serious head injuries which caused blindness in one eye and a paralyzed arm.
