Deputy head of the national teams’ department, Nguyen Trong Giap, said they wanted to wait until the 12th National U21 final and the second U21 international tournament before the final selection is made.
“Back in June, when the National Thanh Nien U21 qualifiers were taking place, we sent football experts to matches around the country to gauge players’ performances, Giap told Thanh Nien.
“We made a list of good players born between 1986 and 1990 and we reviewed the V-League and First Division championships to choose about 28 young players for the national U22 team,” Giap said.
The final list will not be presented to Vietnam Football Federation (VFF)’s standing committee until after the U21 final and the early matches of the 2nd U21 international tournament to be played from September 20 till 28, Giap said.
VFF will then announce the list of selected players on October 1 to prepare for the Merdeka Cup in Malaysia, October 15 till 25 and the Southeast Asian Games in Laos next year, Giap said.
“The National U21 final, with about two-thirds of them participating, will help us refine the selection,” coach of the national U22 team Mai Duc Chung said, referring to the selected players.
“Perhaps one of my assistants – Le Tuan Phong or Pham Van Hung – will come to Quy Nhon Town of Binh Dinhto watch the National U21 Finals,” Chung said.
“Then I and maybe the national team coach Henrique Calisto will be in Hue to watch the second U21 international tournament,” Chung said.
Chung said he had sent a letter to Thanh Nien newspaper reporters asking them to recommend good players for the national U22 team.
If the recommended players are already on the list, Chung said, that’s fine; but if they are not, they will be considered too.
“We don’t want to have any young talent left unnoticed,” Chung said.
“Any young player giving an excellent performance at the U21 Final will surely be selected.”
Giap and Chung both mentioned players such as Long Giang, Phuc Hiep, Thanh Sang and Thai Duong would likely be selected.
