An alternative road around Hoi An
Tourists pose beside their side-cars.
Forget bicycles, motorcycle taxis or even pedicabs - get an eyeful of the ancient town’s countryside from a side-car.

A new two-hour side-car tour, available from Victoria Hoi An Beach Resort and Spa, offers a departure from the usual places of interest.

Passengers can feel the road under their seat with a visit to the tomb of an anonymous man who is believed to have founded Hoi An in the 16th century, and a little-known pagoda in nearby Dong Na Village.

This beautifully-carved pagoda, called Van Duc, was built 10 years ago on the site where the original wooden pagoda stood for four centuries.

Remnants of the old pagoda – a wooden bell stick and a stone gong – can still be seen.

The ride on rough tracks meanders through the Vietnamese countryside’s familiar wonders: paddy fields, shrimp farms, herds of cattle and buffalos eating grass in total peace.

A longer version of the tour includes stops as far away as Thua Thien – Hue Province.

The four-day tour drops by Prao, a small town about 70 km from Hoi An, where friendly locals, wild flowers, roadside boulders and streams await the curious.

Other stops include A Luoi town and Thuan An sea in Thua Thien – Hue as well as the provincial heart - Hue city.

But the tour’s highlight would have to be the breathtaking Hai Van mountain pass.

From the top of this pass, a world unfolds: Lang Co Beach to the north, Da Nang to the south, forests to the west and the ocean to the east.

How much does it cost?

A two-hour side-car tour ticket costs US$15-25.

The four-day side-car excursion package costs $924 per person, including three meals and drinks at the resort and en-route.
