A spacious, multi-leveled Vietnamese cafe, it is a perfect place for a casual chat with friends or a romantic first date.
Located at 52 Dang Dung Street in District 1, the cafe is a world away from the expensive, touristy areas like Dong Khoi or Le Loi streets and instead feels like a refuge away from the city, which is exactly the way cafe manager Lam Nguyen wanted it.
“I like quiet places, and that’s why Ban Sonate was opened at the end of a small street like Dang Dung. It’s out of the way and peaceful there,” said Nguyen.
The entrance to the cafe is filled with welcoming evergreen bamboo and a variety of bonsai and other lush foliage.
But the main attraction is the sandstone rock formations throughout the cafe, arranged as part of the stylish decor and unlikely to be found anywhere else in the city.
While sipping a delectable beverage or reading a newspaper, one can truly let their cares drift away while watching softly murmuring water flow gently down the rocks.
The cafe is divided into different sections.
A non-smoking air-conditioned room filled with art allows guests to relax in front of a large sandstone wall.
And for smokers, a garden-style space is offered beneath a green canopy.
At the top of the cafe, an open-air space provides a cool breeze for those who want a touch of nature.
A seemingly endless drink list goes offers a wide variety of coffees, juices, smoothies, shakes and cocktails for around US$2-3 and a selection of food items is also available.
Ban Sonate’s biggest draw, however, is the nightly live classical music performed by experienced local artists from 8:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Whether for business or pleasure, by day or by night, Ban Sonate always offers a relaxed atmosphere with unique artistic stone arrangements, lush greenery and refined music.
